Homily from Sunday, August 3, 2025
Fr. Dan Shaughnessy
In this powerful and personal homily, Fr. Dan reflects on his recent silent retreat and how it challenged him to consider where his heart truly lies. Drawing from the Gospel about storehouses and the rich man, as well as wisdom from St. Ignatius and a Franciscan sister who survived WWII, Fr. Dan invites us to honestly assess what we treasure most—and whether we’re truly placing our security in Jesus or in the things of this world.
Reflection Questions & Accompaniment Connections
-
What is the first thing you reflexively turn to each day for a sense of security—Jesus, or something else?
Accompaniment Connection: Take 10 minutes tomorrow morning to begin your day with a short prayer instead of checking your phone or bank account. -
Are there any “storehouses” you’re building in your life—areas where you're holding onto excess instead of trusting God?
Accompaniment Connection: Choose one possession this week to give away, donate, or share with someone in need. -
How does your daily routine reveal what (or who) you really treasure?
Accompaniment Connection: Make a simple written list of your daily habits and highlight one change that would help reorient your focus toward God. -
If your life were demanded of you today, what would you wish you had done differently?
Accompaniment Connection: Write a short letter or send a message to someone important in your life, sharing gratitude or reconciliation. -
Do you live with “holy indifference,” trusting God enough to surrender control over what you gain or lose? (Heart of the Homily)
Accompaniment Connection: Each night this week, pray: “Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. Do what you want.” Let it become a habit of surrender.
