Sit and Listen: The Most Practical Thing We Can Do

Sit and Listen: The Most Practical Thing We Can Do

July 21, 2025
Homily by Fr. Joe

This week’s homily draws us into the quiet wisdom of Mary, the contemplative heart in a world of Marthas. Fr. Joe reflects on the co-patrons of the missions—St. Francis Xavier, the bold Jesuit baptizing thousands, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the hidden contemplative who never left her convent. In our fast-paced culture, we’re reminded that mission isn’t only about action—it’s about deep, intentional listening. God speaks subtly; will we make space to hear Him?

Reflection Questions

  • Do I believe that my worth is based on what I do, rather than who I am in Christ?
Accompaniment Connection: In conversations with others, be gentle when they express feeling "not enough." Remind them they’re loved simply for who they are.

  • How often do I let distractions or busyness keep me from listening to God?
Accompaniment Connection: If someone shares feeling overwhelmed, suggest taking 5 minutes of quiet together—or invite them to join you for Adoration or prayer.

  • When was the last time I gave God my first and best time, not just the leftovers?
Accompaniment Connection: Encourage a friend to set aside intentional time for prayer with you this week—maybe over coffee or on a quiet walk.

  • What lies do I believe about rest or quiet? Do I think I’m being lazy when I slow down?
Accompaniment Connection: Be a safe space for someone wrestling with this tension. Share your own struggles honestly to help them feel less alone.

  • Am I willing to sit at the feet of Jesus and truly listen to Him? (Heart of the Homily)
Accompaniment Connection: Invite someone to join you in prayer, journaling, or reading Scripture together—modeling how to listen with the heart.

Thank you for the wonderful questions. Yes sometimes I’m guilty of giving God the leftovers. I never looked at it that way, but this homily may change my life thank you father Joe.
