Set Ablaze with Christ’s Love

Published 8-17-25 bulletin

FR. DAN SHAUGHNESSY

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we gather in faith this week, I invite you to reflect deeply on the words of our Lord from the Gospel of Luke (12:49-53), where Jesus proclaims, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” These words stir the heart and challenge us to consider how we live our faith in a world that often feels divided and conflicted.

Jesus came to ignite a fire within our hearts—a fire that represents His love, His truth, and the transforming power of the Gospel. This is not a fire we keep hidden, but one that calls us to live boldly in accordance with our faith. Sometimes that boldness will bring division, even among those closest to us, yet this is not cause for despair. Rather, it is an invitation to a deeper commitment and more authentic witness.

To “be blazing” for Christ is to embrace our faith with passion and conviction. It means standing firm in what we believe, loving without condition, and speaking truth even when the world prefers ambiguity. It means letting our actions—our mercy, compassion, and commitment to justice—speak the Gospel as clearly as our words.

We know that the division Jesus speaks of is not far from our own lives. Families, communities, and nations find themselves at odds over beliefs, values, and priorities. As disciples, we are called to navigate these moments with grace, remembering that our mission is to bring peace, even when we face disagreement. We must approach others with love and understanding, always working to build bridges rather than walls.

Jesus also speaks of a baptism He must undergo—a reference to His passion and sacrifice. In our own baptism, we share in that same mission, called to lay down our lives for others. This may mean sacrificing comfort, time, or personal desires so that the light of Christ can shine more brightly in the world. It means standing with the marginalized, advocating for justice, and being a steady presence of hope for those in darkness.

As you reflect this week, I invite you to ask yourself: How can you set your part of the world ablaze with Christ’s love? Where might you be called to bring peace within your family or community? How can you show God’s mercy and justice in the ordinary moments of each day?

Let us renew our commitment to living our faith with courage and conviction. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to be faithful witnesses, and may the light of Christ shine through everything we do.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Dan Shaughnessy
