In Silence, Mercy Speaks

Published 4-6-25 bulletin

FR. DAN SHAUGHNESSY

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In preparing for this weekend’s Gospel, I came across a beautiful meditation about the “Woman Caught in Adultery.” This reflection highlights the profound differences between Jesus’ conversations and his parables. While parables are often figurative and broad, Jesus’ dialogues are direct and personal, inviting us to engage deeply with the characters involved.

The meditation focuses on the story found in John 8:1-11, where the scribes and Pharisees bring a woman accused of adultery before Jesus, seeking to trap him. They intend to use the law of Moses against him, but Jesus responds with mercy, challenging those without sin to cast the first stone. This moment reveals not only the mercy of God but also the universal need for forgiveness.

St. Thomas Aquinas is referenced in the meditation, emphasizing how Jesus’ actions—stooping down to write in the dirt—symbolize God’s mercy reaching out to humanity. The silence in this scene speaks volumes, as Jesus illustrates the tension between justice and mercy. Ultimately, the meditation shows that, while the woman is guilty, she finds hope and redemption through Christ’s mercy, leading her to a new path.

This reflection encourages us to examine our own lives and consider how we, too, can embody mercy in our interac-tions with others. It calls us to recognize our shared need for forgiveness and the transformative power of grace.

I encourage you to visit Catholic Answers at bit.ly/4laLvHk to read the full meditation. It offers insight that can deepen our understanding of this Gospel and inspire us to live out Christ’s message of mercy in our daily lives.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Dan Shaughnessy
